About Down Proof Fabric, Down Comforters, Pillows…. Any hotel linen that is filled with down & feathers, All requires a special fabric: “Down-Proof Fabric”, sometimes referred to as “Ticking”, that will help prevent the down and feathers from leaking out the outer bedding surface.
Down Proof Fabrics that are filled with down or down feathers mixed need to be heavier and stronger than the fabric which is only filled with down. These heavier fabrics will also tend to be stiffer, and not as soft as a fabric that can be filled with just down.
Usually, there are two type of Down Proof Fabric, one is 100% cotton 233TC, another is 100% cotton 280TC, all in percale weave. The difference between them are the filling down ratio: the 233TC is suit for lower down ratio; and the 280TC is suit for higher down ratio, like 80% down or 90% down, 233TC is not available to fill that high down, because the high down is smaller than low down, it will leak from the 233TC but not the 280TC. In common use, 233TC is more familiar to seen in market, as it’s much cheaper and also available to fiber filling duvet or pillow. You can check below product for reference.
Actually, “Down-Proof” is a Misnomer.
We know, hotel beddings using down proof fabric, down cluster will not leak out. It is the tiny pieces of broken down clusters, known as “fiber”, and feathers with their sharp pointy ends that will inexorably work their way through the fabric and into your space. So, “fiber proof” or “feather proof” might be a more appropriate description, except for the fact that there is no fabric that is 100% fiber or feather proof, that’s the interesting part of the hotel down products.
